Carey was a fashion model. She stands almost 5'10" tall, and was popular among top American designers, such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and others. Her father, a distinguished scientist who won the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists 1979 Scientist of the Year prize, is a renowned geoscientist. Carey traveled all over due to her father's work. Following her graduation from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, she started to model on the side. The idea caught the attention of an agent at Ford Model Agency New York. The model moved to France in 1980 and lived for a short time in Paris and Bordeaux prior to deciding to move back to New York to continue with her college education and modeling career. She soon began appearing on the covers of Vogue, Glamour, etc. As she modeled and continued to pursue her studies at a full-time level for a literary major at New York University. Then she became interested in acting and started taking classes at the Neighborhood Playhouse of New York. In 1986, she got her first performance as a small part in Club Paradise, with Robin Williams. She enjoys rock climbing ski, windsurfing, and skiing.
